Mid-year check-in: Tech trends 2022

By Alexandra Yeager, Junior Account Executive

Kicking off the year, Touchdown discussed 2022’s PR and marketing trends, but what can we expect from the latest technology trends heading into the latter half of the year?

Artificial intelligence and machine learning

Most people may think of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and envision humanoid robots, but that’s not quite what we’re expecting to see in this year’s tech trends. Instead, businesses can expect AI and Machine Learning (ML) markets to expand and grow, providing opportunities for further development. We already use AI in day-to-day use, such as smartphones and navigation apps, but businesses will see a sharp increase in AI/ML jobs by 2025While these technologies are still in their infancy, this could signal promising innovations to come.

Internet of things

With a vague name like Internet of Things (IoT), it may seem odd that this made the list for 2022’s tech trends. However, anyone who enjoys wifi connectivity, or connection to the Internet, may want to pay attention. Specifically, businesses looking to expedite their data collection and analysis methods.

Utilizing IoT means businesses can provide more efficient and timely services and products to their consumers. Healthcare industries could provide faster medical care, customer service industries may be able to answer customer questions faster and more accurately, and businesses collecting massive amounts of data will be able to predict and neutralize maintenance problems before they even become problems, all by 2030.

Virtual reality and augmented reality

Gamers may have a little more experience with virtual and augmented reality, but 2022 is taking these technologies to the next level. In fact, the U.S. military has already been using Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) as simulation training for groups like fighter pilots and ship captains.

We’re excited to see how VR and AR technologies continue to progress. We’ll see later this year if the global VR/AR market grows to the expected $209.2 billion dollars.

Quantum computing

Quantum computing is currently positioned as a tech disruptor, although still in its early stages. This technology is a form of computing that capitalizes on quantum phenomena and tackles complex problems that classic computers may struggle to solve. Meaning that it easily searches, monitors and analyzes data to be acted on no matter the source.

Recently, quantum computing was used to help develop potential vaccines amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, and in business, it could provide welcomed advances in the bank and finance industries to prevent fraud.

Cybersecurity

Amidst increasing cyberattacks and evolving infiltration methods, cybersecurity now must adapt and improve current security measures. While it’s not an emerging technology, current trends certainly indicate a much-needed refresh of innovation.

Hackers and ransomware groups are attacking with more aggressive tactics, and we’re seeing data exfiltration as a more prominent tool during ransomware attacks. We are in a technological world, and the fact is we’ll constantly need to update our security measures to combat emerging bad actors. In 2022, expect to see new and emerging cybersecurity tools!
